| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in Arnold Machin's classic portrait as adapted for Isle of Man coinage. The effigy is finely detailed with elaborately styled hair and a lightly draped shoulder. The legend ISLE OF MAN arcs along the left periphery and ELIZABETH II along the right, both in raised Latin lettering. The date 1982 appears in the lower exergue beneath the portrait. The mirror-like proof fields provide strong contrast against the frosted relief of the effigy. |

The 1982 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Spain, was the first to expand to 24 national teams — a logistical and political undertaking that brought together sides from across Africa, Asia, and Central America in numbers previously unseen. The Isle of Man, under the Pobjoy Mint, was unusually aggressive in issuing commemorative coinage for international sporting events during this period, producing the same Crown design across multiple metal variants simultaneously.
The platinum proof at .950 fineness and 52 grams represents the apex of that tiered release strategy. At the time of issue, platinum commanded a significant premium over gold, making this among the most expensive new-issue crowns available to collectors in 1982.
