The Isle of Man's Pobjoy Mint produced a sprawling run of commemorative crowns throughout the 1980s, and the 1986 FIFA World Cup series was among the most commercially aggressive — multiple reverse designs issued simultaneously to maximize collector sales. Mexico '86 was itself a tournament transplanted at short notice after Colombia withdrew as host in 1983, citing economic constraints, leaving FIFA scrambling for a replacement with under three years to prepare.
