Sir Francis Chichester completed his solo circumnavigation via the clipper route in 1967 aboard Gipsy Moth IV, finishing in 226 days — slower than the 19th-century wool clippers he was racing against in spirit, but remarkable for a 65-year-old man sailing alone. The Isle of Man issued commemoratives marking the voyage, and Pobjoy Mint, which held the Isle of Man coining contract from 1973, produced both standard and proof versions across several years.
The .925 silver proof was struck in 1981, fourteen years after the voyage itself and four years after Chichester's death in 1972.
