The Isle of Man Post Office Authority began issuing commemorative crowns aggressively from 1975 onward, capitalizing on the island's control over its own coinage following the Coinage Act 1971. The horse tram subject commemorates the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, which opened in 1876 — still operating today as one of the last remaining horse-drawn tram services in the world.
The .925 silver version, KM#38a, was struck alongside a cupro-nickel counterpart, with the silver issue aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
