Pobjoy Mint struck this piece for the Isle of Man as part of its aggressive commemorative program tied to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics — the first Summer Games the Isle of Man participated in as a separate competing nation under its own flag rather than within a British team. The Los Angeles Games were themselves shaped by a Soviet-led boycott in direct retaliation for the U.S.-led boycott of Moscow 1980, meaning the gymnastics competition these coins celebrated was notably thin on Eastern Bloc competitors who had dominated the discipline for decades.
