| 正面描述 | The Costa Rican national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring an oval cartouche with three snow-capped volcanoes rising above a valley, flanked by the Pacific Ocean on the right and the Caribbean Sea on the left, each bearing a sailing vessel. A rising sun appears in the upper left of the cartouche, and seven five-pointed stars arc above the scene, representing the seven provinces. The arms are surmounted by a blue sky and encircled by a wreath. The legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA is inscribed along the upper periphery, with AMERICA CENTRAL along the lower, and the date 1954 appearing within the design. |

Costa Rica's postwar monetary reorganization brought the Banco Central into existence in 1950, replacing the older Banco Nacional as the sole issuing authority. This stainless steel colón was struck at a moment when the young central bank was still establishing its coinage infrastructure, and production of these pieces was contracted to the Casa de Moneda de México rather than struck domestically. The KM#186.1 designation distinguishes this subtype from a later variety with a modified design detail introduced mid-series.
