Obverse description Central field features the national coat of arms of Costa Rica, depicting a mountainous landscape with a rising sun emitting prominent rays above, three volcanoes over a body of water with a sailing vessel, and three stars in the upper portion of the shield. The shield is flanked on either side by seven lances or rifle barrels arranged in a fan pattern, and enclosed within a wreath of laurel and coffee branches tied at the base. The composition is rendered in moderate relief with fine milled dentilation around the coin's rim. No legend appears on the obverse, the entire field being devoted to the armorial device.
