Obverse description Central device features the Costa Rican national coat of arms: a quartered shield depicting three volcanoes rising above a maritime scene with a sailing vessel, surmounted by a row of five stars and flanked by seven upright rifles with fixed bayonets arranged in a fan formation on either side. The shield is encircled by a wreath of laurel and coffee branches tied at the base, all set within a toothed border. The legends REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA and AMERICA CENTRAL appear in the surrounding field.
