Obverse description The obverse features the national arms of Mexico — an eagle displayed upon a prickly pear cactus growing from a rock amid water, devouring a serpent — rendered in the earlier, more naturalistic style adopted in the late nineteenth century. The legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper rim, and at the base of the design a sprig of holm oak (encina) and a laurel branch flank the cactus, forming a wreath-like arrangement. The devices are executed in moderate relief against a flat field.
