The magnetic cent appeared in 2002 as part of a cost-cutting shift away from the tombac and zinc compositions used through the 1990s. Copper-plated steel had already proven viable in other Commonwealth mints, and the Royal Canadian Mint adopted it permanently that year. The Golden Jubilee issue gave the transition a ceremonial cover, but the real driver was simple economics — steel blanks were substantially cheaper to source and process than the previous alloy.
The magnetic property is the distinguishing diagnostic between this piece and the non-magnetic zinc-core cents struck the same year under the same reverse design.
