| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse features a detailed rendering of a two-leaved maple twig with two samaras, a design attributed to G.E. Kruger Gray and adopted since 1937. The denomination ONE CENT appears above the central device, with the date positioned to the left and the country name CANADA arcing along the lower periphery. The engravers' initials K·G appear in the lower right field. The Proof surface accentuates the fine relief of the botanical design against a mirrored field. |

The third portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, was adopted by Canada in 1990 — notably without the tiara that appeared on the Machin effigy used elsewhere in the Commonwealth. De Pédery-Hunt was the first Canadian to portray the Queen on circulation coinage, and the only portrait sculptor for Canadian coins born outside the country's borders, having emigrated from Hungary following the 1956 uprising.
The Canadian cent was eliminated in 2013, making proof strikes from this final portrait period the last ceremonial documentation of the denomination before its abolition.
