Reverse description Two fronds of the silver fern (Cyathea dealbata), New Zealand's national symbol, are depicted in fine botanical detail, their serrated pinnae rendered with exceptional relief, curving from the lower field to frame the central denomination numeral. The large bold numeral '1' occupies the right-centre of the field within the embrace of the fern fronds. The engraver's initials 'JB' for James Berry appear at the base of the design between the frond stems. No peripheral legend is present, leaving the composition uncluttered and visually balanced.
