Obverse description The obverse features a large central circular perforation occupying most of the field, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arranged in a curved arc around the upper and lateral periphery. The date 1884 appears in the lower exergual area beneath the hole. The outer rim is bordered by a fine milled denticle pattern. The design is entirely typographic with no effigy or allegorical device, reflecting the experimental nature of this holed cent pattern.
