| Obverse description | Round cast bronze coin with a central square perforation (方穿) surrounded by a raised square inner rim. Four Chinese characters in regular script (楷書, kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 治 (zhì), 通 (tōng), 平 (píng), 寶 (bǎo), composing the reign-era legend 治平通寶. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat, unadorned field, and are contained within a plain raised outer rim. The overall style is characteristic of Northern Song Dynasty cast coinage, with well-formed, balanced strokes typical of the kaishu calligraphic tradition. |
