Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a plain inner rim, with four Chinese characters in clerical script (lishu) arranged in cruciform reading order around the central hole: 元 (Yuan) at top, 豐 (Feng) at left, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bao) at bottom. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat field. A raised rim borders the coin's circumference. The inscription reads 元豐通寶 (Yuanfeng Tongbao), denoting the Yuanfeng reign era of Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song dynasty.
