The Dali Yuanbao was issued during the reign of Emperor Daizong, a period when the Tang dynasty was clawing back stability after the catastrophic An Lushan Rebellion had gutted imperial finances and scattered the court. Emergency cash coinages of this era were frequently debased and inconsistently produced, with provincial mints operating under minimal central oversight. The "without mark" variety lacks the supervisory mint or workshop character found on related issues, a feature that continues to complicate precise attribution to specific casting sites.
