The Tenpō Ichibugin was introduced in 1837 as part of the Tokugawa shogunate's effort to stabilize a silver currency system that had been debased repeatedly through the Bunsei period. Unlike the oval chōgin and mameita-gin it was designed to replace, this piece was produced in a fixed weight and fineness — a deliberate move toward standardization that the shogunate had resisted for decades.
Production continued through the turbulent final years of the Edo period, ending only with the Meiji government's currency reforms. Pieces struck in the 1860s circulated alongside the first Western-influenced issues.
