The ashraphi was Nepal's traditional gold coin unit, its name derived from the Arabic ashrafi — itself a denomination that had circulated across the Islamic world for centuries before becoming absorbed into South Asian monetary vocabulary. Tribhuvana Bir Bikram, who was king during this issue, would later become the central figure in the 1950–51 revolution that ended Rana oligarchic rule and restored genuine royal authority to the throne, though in 1935 he remained largely a ceremonial figurehead under Rana prime ministerial dominance.
The tola weight standard — rooted in traditional Indian metrology — kept Nepal's gold coinage legible to regional merchants long after formal minting practices had modernized elsewhere.
