Aversbeschreibung The second portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as modelled by Arnold Machin, is depicted in right-facing profile occupying the central field. The Queen wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and a draped bodice, her hair styled in an upswept coiffure. The circumferential legend reads ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II, with the date 1984 positioned in the lower exergual area, flanked by two small dots. The Pobjoy Mint privy mark (PM) appears in small letters at the base of the truncation.

Reversbeschreibung The central device depicts the Archangel Michael, nimbed and winged, shown in dynamic three-quarter stance subduing a prostrate dragon or serpentine demon beneath his feet. The archangel raises a sword aloft in his right hand while bearing a shield in his left, with the defeated creature writhing beneath him amid flames to the left. The entire central design is enclosed within a decorative rope or chain border encircling the field. In the lower portion of the coin, flanking the numeral 1, the legend FINE GOLD and OUNCE appears in two flanking segments, with ANGEL inscribed in larger lettering immediately below. A small heraldic shield device appears at the top of the inner border.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The Angel series launched in 1984 as the Isle of Man Treasury's direct challenge to the Krugerrand's dominance of the bullion market. Tynwald — one of the world's oldest continuous parliaments — granted the Treasury authority to issue legal tender gold coinage independently of the Royal Mint, a jurisdictional distinction that mattered commercially: unlike British gold coins of the period, the Angel carried no VAT liability for UK purchasers under Isle of Man tax arrangements.

The inaugural year remains the key date for type collectors. Mintage figures for 1984 were never formally published by the Treasury.
