| Obverse description | Central field features the coat of arms of the Republic and Canton of Neuchâtel — a quartered shield bearing diagonal stripes and a cross — encircled by a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the base. Above the shield, a radiant sunburst with a central cross emanates from the upper field. An inner circular legend reads NUL NE PEUT SERVIR DEUX MAÎTRES, with the commemorative dates 1848 and 1998 flanking the inscription 1er MARS at the base.
