| Reverse description | A crowned, two-tailed rampant lion facing left, holding a curved halberd — the heraldic symbol of Norway — depicted within an inner circle. The mintmaster's initials appear between the lion's hind legs in the lower field. The royal motto encircles the design in the outer legend, with the date 1654 incorporated at the conclusion of the inscription, the year rendered with the mintmaster's mark between the two halves of the numeral. |

Frederik III's early reign saw Norway's mint at Christiania operating under chronic administrative strain — the 1650s were marked by repeated disputes over mint leases, personnel, and the Danish crown's attempts to standardize coinage across its composite monarchy. The fractional speciedaler denominations of this period were struck in small quantities and circulated hard in a Norwegian economy still heavily reliant on barter and foreign coin.
Skaare 551 is among the scarcer fractional types of the reign.
