Ahmad bin Yahya ruled the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen with near-total isolation from the outside world, deliberately suppressing foreign influence and modern infrastructure. His government minted this fractional silver issue through much of his reign as part of a coinage system that had changed little since his father Yahya's time — itself a reflection of Ahmad's hostility toward economic modernization. The kingdom had no central bank. Currency policy was, in practical terms, the Imam's personal prerogative.
Ahmad was assassinated in September 1962, and the republic was proclaimed within days of his death, ending the Mutawakkilite dynasty and this coinage series simultaneously.
