Additional information

Fat'h Ali Shah's quarter toman coinage went through multiple type revisions during his long reign (1797–1834), partly driven by recurring debasement pressures and partly by the administrative independence of provincial mints. Isfahan operated with considerable autonomy, and its output frequently diverged from Tehran in both fineness and execution. By the type V phase, the gold content had stabilized somewhat following the monetary disruptions of the early Russo-Persian War period — the first conflict with Russia concluded disastrously at Gulistan in October 1813, the very year of this piece.
