Additional information

Sigismund von Schrattenbach served as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1753 until his death in December 1771, and is remembered in numismatic history largely for one decision: he employed the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as Konzertmeister at his court. This quarter thaler dates to Mozart's tenth year, when the family was already navigating the Archbishop's increasingly reluctant patronage of their extended European tours.

Salzburg's ecclesiastical mint operated under direct archiepiscopal authority, and Schrattenbach's coinage is generally well-executed for the period. The Zöttl reference remains the essential specialized catalog for this series.
