| Obverse description | Bare-headed, crowned effigy of King George VI facing left, modelled by Percy Metcalfe, with the St. Edward's Crown prominently rendered above the portrait. The royal title legend arcs around the periphery in raised Latin capital letters, reading from lower left to lower right. The truncation of the neck is plain and unadorned, and the field is smooth. The design is enclosed by a toothed (beaded) rim running the full circumference of the coin. |

George VI's accession in December 1936 following his brother's abdication forced a rapid redesign of Indian coinage across all denominations. The 1938–1939 quarter rupee belongs to the earliest window of his Indian issues, struck at the Bombay and Calcutta mints — identifiable by their respective dot and no-dot distinctions — before wartime silver pressures forced compositional changes to the broader series shortly after.
