Gustav Vasa struck this issue in 1522 while still fighting to consolidate control over Sweden — the Battle of Uppsala that year was among the conflicts still unsettled when these coins entered circulation. The gyllen denomination itself was borrowed directly from the Rhineland gulden tradition, an attempt to anchor Swedish currency to a familiar northwest European standard at a moment when the kingdom had no established monetary infrastructure of its own.
As KM#1, this is catalogued as the first coin of the Swedish kingdom proper, following the dissolution of the Kalmar Union.
