The quarter florin was already an anachronism when these were struck. Austria's defeat at Königgrätz in 1866 forced the Ausgleich of 1867, restructuring the empire into the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy — and the florin coinage limped on only briefly before decimal reform replaced it with the krone system in 1892. These pieces circulated during a period of acute fiscal strain, with Austria still servicing the indemnity imposed by Prussia after the Seven Weeks' War.
The .520 fineness is notably low for a silver subsidiary coin, a deliberate policy choice reflecting the treasury's reluctance to commit higher-grade silver to denominations likely to be hoarded or melted.
