1/4 Florin - Francis Joseph I

The quarter florin occupied an awkward position in Austrian currency following the 1857 monetary convention that unified coinage standards across the German states. Austria's involvement in the disastrous Second Italian War of Independence in 1859 — ending with the loss of Lombardy at Villafranca — strained imperial finances severely, and the government's suspension of silver convertibility in 1859 meant these coins were hoarded almost immediately upon issue. Years of circulating silver disappearing into mattresses is why genuine circulated examples show more wear than the short production window might suggest.
