The quarter anna occupied the lowest rung of British India's decimal-adjacent bronze coinage, and by Edward VII's reign it was largely a coin of the bazaar economy — handled by people who rarely encountered silver. Production was split between the Calcutta and Bombay mints throughout this period, with Calcutta typically carrying the heavier striking burden. No mint mark appears on Calcutta issues; Bombay pieces carry a small "B" that collectors frequently overlook on worn examples.
