| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of Yuan Shikai in military uniform, rendered in high relief with characteristic full jowls and drooping moustache, wearing an epauletted tunic with a prominent collar insignia. The portrait fills the central field, engraved in a bold, naturalistic style attributed to Italian engraver Luigi Giorgi. A six-character Chinese legend arcs across the upper field reading 中華民國三年 (Year 3 of the Republic of China), with the characters 三年 flanking the portrait at the sides. The coin is bordered by a beaded inner ring. |

The "Fat Man" dollar series — officially the Yuan Shikai coinage — was introduced following the president's consolidation of power after Yuan dissolved parliament in 1913. The half-yuan denomination was struck in notably smaller quantities than the full dollar, and the .700 fineness was a deliberate reduction from the earlier Qing standard, a quiet fiscal adjustment that went largely unremarked at the time of issue.
Kann#655 designation places this among the confirmed circulation strikes rather than the later restrike production that muddies attribution on several related types.
