| Obverse description | Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms composed of five small escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each charged with five bezants (quinas), forming the traditional shield of Portugal. The five shields are disposed with one at top, one at left, one at centre, one at right, and one at bottom, all within a plain inner circle. A Latin legend surrounds the design within the outer beaded border, reading +EMANVEL:R:P:ET:A, abbreviating the royal titulature of King Manuel I. The die-cutting is typical of late fifteenth- to early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage, with bold relief and slightly irregular flan. |
