Reverse description Central field features a floriated or quadrilobe cross, boldly struck in relief, with lobed terminals to each arm and a small central pellet or annulet at the intersection. The cross is surrounded by a partial circular legend in Latin along the coin's periphery, partially obscured by the irregular outline of the hammered flan. The design is executed in the plain hammered style typical of Portuguese silver coinage of the reign of João III, with the cross motif filling most of the available field. Strike weakness is evident at several points around the edge, consistent with hand-hammered production methods of the period.
