João II inherited a mint system strained by the financial demands of sustained Atlantic expansion, and the fractional silver denominations issued under his reign were workhorses of everyday commerce rather than prestige pieces. The vintém itself was a relatively recent introduction to the Portuguese monetary system, and the half-vintém occupied the awkward lower edge of silver coinage — small enough that losses to wear and attrition were enormous, which explains why surviving specimens in any decent state of preservation are genuinely scarce.
Gomes J2 08.01 is among the more elusive of João II's silver fractions.
