| Reverse description | Central field features a plain cross with expanding arms set within an inner circle, with four pellets or annulets placed one in each angle of the cross, and a small crown surmounting the cross at the top. The design is rendered in bold, simple hammered relief characteristic of mid-16th-century Portuguese coinage. The circumferential legend IN:HOC:SIGNO:VINCES, meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer', runs around the coin in Latin capital letters, separated by ornamental stops and punctuated by small star or pellet devices. |
