R : P : ET : A : D : GVINE, is struck in Gothic Latin lettering between two beaded borders, identifying the king as Emanuel, King of Portugal and the Algarves and Lord of Guinea. The overall style reflects the bold, deeply struck hammered technique characteristic of early sixteenth-century Lisbon Mint silver coinage. |
