| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the traditional quinas (five blue escutcheons each charged with silver bezants) surrounded by the castles of Castile — set within a beaded inner border. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate design. The circumferential legend in Latin reads IOANNES III REX PORTVG, identifying the issuer as King João III of Portugal. The die work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Portuguese hammered silver coinage, with bold relief on the central device and slightly irregular flan edges typical of the period. |

| Reverse description | Central device features a large Avis cross (Cross of the Order of Aviz) with flared, fleur-de-lis terminals on each arm, occupying most of the field. The cross is rendered in bold relief against a plain field, with the quadrants either empty or bearing a small pellet or roundel depending on the die variety (Gomes J3 87 and J3 88 respectively). The circumferential Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — runs around the periphery within a beaded border, referencing the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese crown. The overall execution is typical of Lisbon Mint hammered silver production of the mid-sixteenth century. |
