| Obverse description | Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms composed of five escutcheons arranged in a cross pattern, each escutcheon charged with five bezants (quinas), surrounded by a border of castles representing the Kingdom of Portugal. The heraldic shield is rendered in the hammered style typical of late 16th-century Iberian coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading ANTONIVS I D G REX PORTV, identifying the issuer as António I, King of Portugal by the grace of God. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and uneven strike associated with hand-hammered production. |
