Mahmud Shah II presided over the terminal decline of the Malwa Sultanate, spending much of his reign as a political pawn manipulated by rival Afghan noble factions — the Khaljis and the Rajas of Chanderi. By 1531, the Sultanate had been extinguished by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, who had Mahmud Shah II executed after capturing Mandu. Copper fractions from this reign survive in notably poor condition as a rule, consistent with heavy use in local bazaar trade during a period of near-constant military disruption.
