1/2 Speciedaler - Frederik III

Frederik III inherited the Danish-Norwegian throne in 1648 under terms that forced him to sign a haandfæstning — a coronation charter — that significantly curtailed royal power in favor of the Council of the Nobility. The speciedaler coinage of his early reign was issued under those constrained conditions, two years before the catastrophic outcome of the Karl Gustav Wars and the subsequent 1660 coup that abolished the elective monarchy entirely and made Frederik an absolute king. These coins belong to the powerless version of that reign.
