Christian IV's Norwegian coinage of this period was struck at Christiania — the mint established in 1628, the same year this type begins. It was among the first substantial silver coinage produced on Norwegian soil rather than imported from Danish mints, a direct consequence of the king's aggressive economic reorganization of his northern kingdom following the costly Kalmar War.
Rønning distinguishes varieties 9 and 9a by subtle die differences; the 9a is considerably scarcer in survivors.
