Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, fought on December 9, 1824 — the engagement that effectively ended Spanish colonial rule in South America. The victory by Sucre's forces over Viceroy La Serna's army on the Pampa de la Quinua was decisive enough that Spain never mounted a serious attempt to retake the continent.
Peru issued a coordinated series of commemorative gold and silver pieces for the sesquicentennial. KM#268 is the smallest gold denomination in that set.
