Obverse description The obverse field is entirely occupied by bold Arabic calligraphy executed in the Naskh script, arranged in three horizontal registers separated by raised linear divisions. The uppermost register bears the Kalima shahada (Islamic declaration of faith), the central register carries the name of the Prophet Muhammad as Messenger of God, and the lower register contains the mint name Surat together with the Hijri regnal date. The legends are struck in high relief on an irregular, roughly circular flan characteristic of Mughal hammered coinage, with portions of the inscription occasionally falling off the flan. The overall presentation is austere and purely epigraphic, in accordance with Mughal imperial numismatic tradition.
