| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field displays the crowned Gothic initial 'M' for Manuel, surmounted by a royal crown, all within a beaded inner circle. The 'M' is rendered in a bold Gothic style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Portuguese coinage. A circular Latin legend runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer rim, reading the king's royal titles. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered copper issues of the Manueline period. |

Manuel I's copper fractional coinage was produced partly to address the chronic shortage of low-denomination coins that plagued everyday commerce in early sixteenth-century Portugal — silver simply wasn't reaching small transactions. The Porto mint, operating under royal license, struck these alongside Lisbon, though output records for the period are fragmentary and surviving Porto-attributed pieces are considerably scarcer than their Lisbon counterparts.
The Gomes E1.07 reference places this among the earliest emission types of Manuel's reign.
