Obverse description Central field features the heraldic coat of arms of the East India Company: a quartered shield displaying the cross of St. George, supported on either side by a passant lion, with a lion rampant as crest above the shield. Two flags are displayed at the upper corners of the shield. Below the arms, a ribbon scroll bears the date 1853, flanked by ornamental scrollwork. The abbreviated Latin legend AUSP: REG: & SEN: ANG: (meaning 'Under the auspices of the King and Senate of England') appears along the lower border.
