The 1862 coinage reform unified India's chaotic pre-Mutiny currency landscape — dozens of presidency coinages, princely issues, and East India Company types were swept out in favor of a single imperial series. The half pice was the smallest denomination in that new system, and its copper issues were struck at Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, with the mint of origin determinable by subtle die characteristics that KM#466 does not fully distinguish.
Calcutta-struck examples from the early 1860s are prone to uneven planchet preparation, a documented production issue at that facility during the transition period.
