| Obverse description | Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms, comprising a shield quartered with castles and the quinas (five escutcheons) of Portugal, surmounted by a crown, all struck in high relief typical of hammered coinage. The mint marks G and A flank the lower portion of the shield, identifying the Goa mint and the assayer. The date 1630 appears within the circumscribed legend. The surrounding Latin legend reads PHILIPVS III PORT ET A R, identifying the issuing monarch as Philip III of Portugal. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, characteristic of hand-hammered silver coinage produced at the Goa mint. |
