Sten Sture the Elder governed Sweden not as king but as regent — a deliberately ambiguous position he held through political maneuvering after the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471, where Swedish and Finnish forces defeated the Danish-backed King Christian I on the outskirts of Stockholm. Coinage struck under his regency occupied equally uncertain legal ground, issued in the name of Swedish authority without a crowned monarch to anchor it.
The half örtug is the smallest denomination in this series. The Lagerqvist references 9a through 9e indicate documented die variations across the type, suggesting multiple production runs rather than a single consolidated striking.
