Additional information

Krishnadevaraya's reign marked the political and military apex of the Vijayanagara Empire, during which he campaigned successfully against the Bahmani Sultanate's successor states and the Orissa Gajapatis. His administration issued copper fractions in substantial quantities to service the dense market economy of the Deccan — Portuguese traders arriving at Goa during precisely this period documented the remarkable monetization of even small transactions in Vijayanagara-controlled markets. The half jital denomination existed specifically to reach that lower register of daily commerce.
