Beschrijving keerzijde A short cross pattee with broad, splayed arms fills the central field, dividing it into four quarters. The letters D, V, X, and C (abbreviating DVCA or DUX C[omitis], referring to the ducal title) are individually placed in each of the four angles formed by the cross arms. The legends are enclosed within a beaded circle and a peripheral legend band, all characteristic of hammered Brabantine half-groats of the period.

Aanvullende informatie

Joanna and Wenceslas ruled Brabant jointly from 1355 following Joanna's inheritance of the duchy, with Wenceslas — her husband and Duke of Luxembourg — holding co-ducal authority until his death at the Battle of Baesweiler in 1371. That battle, fought against the combined forces of Guelders and Jülich, ended disastrously for Brabant and left Joanna to govern alone for another three decades. Coins issued in their joint names bracket a politically turbulent window in Brabantine history.

Witte 398 places this half groat within a tightly documented sequence of the duchy's silver coinage.
