Obverse description Standing full-length figure of Saint John the Baptist facing, robed in a long garment, raising his right hand in blessing and holding a cross-staff in his left hand; a radiate star or lily ornament appears to the left of the figure in the field. The surrounding Latin legend reads S IOHANNES B, identifying the patron saint. The design closely follows the Florentine florin prototype, rendered in the bold, slightly crude style typical of hammered Majorcan gold coinage of the fifteenth century.
